Housing
Inspired by the dramatic coastal landscape and steep topography of Çeşme, İzmir, Tonga Houses are conceived as a series of minimalist villas that seamlessly adapt to their natural setting. Rather than dominating the hillside, the project responds sensitively to the terrain through a composition of interlocking horizontal platforms that follow the site’s contours. This stepped configuration allows each residence to benefit from uninterrupted sea views while preserving privacy and visual integration with the landscape.
The restrained architectural language, defined by clean lines, neutral materials, and geometric clarity, intentionally recedes to foreground the surrounding nature. Rotated and shifted platforms frame the horizon, shade outdoor areas, and transform terraces into integral extensions of daily life. Each level organizes open, semi-open, and enclosed spaces beneath a continuous roof plane, establishing fluid transitions between interior and exterior.
A defining design element is the circular voids carved into the floor slabs, which draw daylight deep into the interiors and create dynamic light patterns throughout the day. These vertical openings connect different levels visually, enhancing spatial depth and openness. Tonga Houses offer not only residences, but a calm and immersive spatial experience rooted in place.
